Got Motivation Hult Blog
At school, or on the job, smarts will undoubtedly help you. But there is one element that will help you more, and it doesnââ¬â¢t involve the ability to create esoteric financial models. Itââ¬â¢s called motivation. And if you are just starting your career and donââ¬â¢t have a robust track record of professional accomplishments, motivation can be your best friend. Possessing a high level of horsepower may give you a lengthy winning streak at chess games with friends, but all the cerebral firepower in the world cant help you if you fail to produce on the job. In the workplace, what matters most are results (and where quality is often favored over quantity). Achieving (great) results is not always easy. Sometimes youââ¬â¢ve got to drum up your inner cheerleader (or whatever motivating force you choose) to learn new things, overcome obstacles, form solutions, and ultimately keep your eye on the prize.à Sometimes this also means boosting the spirits of flagging teammates or direct reports.à IQ may impress, but it doesnââ¬â¢t inspire. In the real world, some employers weigh the only track record you may have: grades. Some weigh them heavily either as a proxy for intelligence, or as evidence of a strong work ethic and some donââ¬â¢t consider them at all. In general (and depending on your career path and ambitions), after a few years on the job you may never discuss your grades again.à But if you change jobs, or are vying for a promotion, you can be certain that you will be asked about your professional track record: your on-the-job successes.à At some point in your career, and earlier rather than later, your list of professional accomplishments will trump GPA and test scores. In an interview with former Lockheed Martin Chairman and CEO, Norman Augustine, Jonathan Wai, elicited this insight from Augustine: ââ¬Å"Earlier in my career we used college grades as the best indicator of future performance among new graduates. Unfortunately, the extraordinary inflation that has taken place in grades in recent decades has made grades all but meaningless to potential employers. Some of the companies with which I have been associated (as a member of their board) have thus placed emphasis on IQ tests and many of those companies have been extremely successful in identifying talent in this manner. My own experience, however, has been that motivation will beat raw intelligence almost every time.â⬠Augustine doesnââ¬â¢t stop there. He goes on to explain that an employeeââ¬â¢s motivation can help predict ââ¬Å"future contributions.â⬠This is an especially helpful piece of advice for those making the transition from student to professional. Because by the time you reach the interview round with a job prospect your ââ¬Å"hardâ⬠skill set has already been mostly assessed.à This is the step where the recruiter, or interview panel, is attempting to determine a number of things about you that may not be on your resume:à cultural fit, attitude, communication skills, and energy level.à It also represents a window of opportunity for you to reference the times your skyscraper-high level of motivation propelled you through thorny issues, team dysfunctions, and helped you to ultimately prevail. The real world has ever-persistent thorny issues and team dysfunctions, and an employer wants to know that you wonââ¬â¢t be daunted. Think of motivation as full-body pro tective armor for the real world. But, if you choose the shield of IQ instead, it could be your Achillesââ¬â¢ heel. Iââ¬â¢ll leave you with one last point.à A newly released study by researchers at the Universities of Munich and Bielefeld looked at the math abilities of over 3,000 primary and high school students. They found that ââ¬Å"intelligence was strongly linked to studentsââ¬â¢ math achievement, but only in the initial development of competence in the subject. Motivation and study skills turned out to be more important factors in terms of studentsââ¬â¢ growth,â⬠as they progressed in their course of study, according to Kou Murayama, Ph.D., one of the researchers. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËOur study suggests that studentsââ¬â¢ competencies to learn in math involve factors that can be nurtured by education,ââ¬â¢ said Murayama. ââ¬ËEducational programs focusing on studentsââ¬â¢ motivation and study skills could be an important way to advance their competency in math as well as in other subjects.â⬠To read more on the study, click here. I knew that Iââ¬â¢d have likely stayed in my neighborhood for years to come if I didnââ¬â¢t take this opportunity. Iââ¬â¢d not lived or studied outside of the U.S. before. So I left my job as a global strategist at an advertising agency and moved halfway around the world. Iââ¬â¢ve come back a more culturally aware, well-versed person. Iââ¬â¢ve realized that everything is a learning experience and an opportunity for growth. Ill definitely carry this mindset with me into the future. Im excited to see how I can establish myself in whatever city Ill be lucky enough to call home and still maintain deep connections with people all over the world. Iââ¬â¢m inspired by my classmates every day. Hearing some of their life stories and how getting this degree fits into their greater mission has been very humbling. Online Education vs. Traditional Education Essay - 275 Words
Online Education vs. Traditional Education (Essay Sample) Content: Online Education vs. Traditional EducationStudentà ¢Ã¢â ¬s NameUniversity AffiliationOnline Education vs. Traditional EducationIs An Online Education Just As Legitimate As A Traditional Education? Why Or Why Not?Online education is one of the most common modes of acquiring knowledge and proper academic credentials that can propel an individual to success (Redpath, 2012). The rise of online education has elicited concerns among educationists about its legitimacy vis-ÃÆ'-vis that of traditional education. This essay compares online education with traditional education in order to determine whether online education is legitimate. Legitimacy refers to the legality of the institutions of learning, accreditation, and the quality of their education.Traditional education has been in existence since the beginning of formal education and has been able to gain trust of the public as the most viable form of learning. It is easier for education authorities and the public to mo nitor, access, and control the learning environment in traditional schools. This makes it easy to regulate the quality of education and maintain high standards through accreditation of learning institutions. Proper regulatory frameworks help to ensure that traditional brick and mortar institutions provide the best education (Redpath, 2012).The first concern about legitimacy of online education is accreditation. This is the official recognition or endorsement of learning institutions. While most of the traditional schools are accredited, there is concern about accreditation of online schools. However, the truth is that online education is also accredited (Gibson, Harris, Colaric, 2008). Some of the best online education comes from traditional brick and mortar institutions as part of their distance learning programs. These institutions have accreditation to offer online courses concurrently with their traditional courses. The question of legality of academic certificates from onlin e course offered in these schools, therefore, does not arise. While there are many other schools offering online education, prospective students have to conduct prior research to determine accreditation of the institutions before admission or enrollment. The same procedure also applies to traditional schools. The other concern about legitimacy is the quality of education. There is very little difference between the quality of online education and traditional education. This is because both have the same requirements, use the same course materials, and rely on highly qualified professional teachers and professors. Requirements in an online faculty are similar to those in traditional resident faculty. In some cases, the same tutors and professors in traditional schools may be called upon to moderate online course in their institutions. In fact, online students have more time to access more information on the internet during their classes and discussion forums. This makes the quality o f online education even better.Another legitimacy concern about online education is the value of online certificates. More employers are becoming open to accepting certificates from online schools because of the high quality of online education. Contemporary lifestyles have made individuals busier than before making it difficult for most people to attend classes in traditional schools. Online education provides flexibility and affordability for many students (Moore Bourne, 2005). Many people in the society, therefore, continue to attach greater value on online education than traditional education. In conclusion, online education is legitimate. Online education continues to grow and ex...
